The first thing we have to do is analyze the bite of the keys. Every key’s bumps and ridge are called teeth. They will fit into the mouth of the lock and “make it speak.” Analyzing this lets us pick a place where we would change the key configuration.

Next, we match the teeth with the mouth and then decide what section of the multiple tumblers and switches we should switch out. It could be as simple as making a switch and then editing the key, without the need for a complete new lock.

Often the easiest and most cost-effective way of making a rekeyed lock is to replace a single section of the lock. If you change even one small section of a lock and try the old key, it will not turn, and any non-authorized users risk breaking off the key they’re trying to use.
